Workers unite: the unions are back
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom government has proposed statutory labor union recognition after a vote in favor of 40% of employees, or where more than half employees are already members. The number of labor union members has dropped to 6.7 million in 1998 from 12.2 million in 1979. Labor unions are more common in the public sector, and private sector unions are more conciliatory than in the 1970s. Jobs have been shed despite partnerships between unions and companies. Unions will represent challenges for companies despite these changes, if the government's proposals are implemented.
