Femtosecond IR study of excited-state relaxation and electron-injection dynamics of Ru(dcbpy)2(NCS)2 in solution and on nanocrystalline TiO2 and Al2O3 thin films

Article Abstract:

Femtosecond infrared spectroscopy was used in studying the excited-state relaxation and electron-injection dynamics of Ru(dcbpy)2(NCS)2 deposited on TiO2 and Al2O3 thin films and in solution. It took less than 100 fs for the long-lived metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited state to appear in Ru N3 adsorbed in ethanol. Ru N3 adsorbed on Al2O3 thin films needed less than 75 fs for the MLCT to develop. The mid-IR signal in the 1700 to 2400 per cm region was dominated by injected electrons in TiO2 for Ru N3 adsorbed in TiO2 thin films.

Multiple-exponential electron injection in Ru(dcbpy)s(SCN)2 sensitized ZnO nanocrystalline thin films

Article Abstract:

The femtosecond mid-IR absorption spectroscopy is used to investigate the electron injection dynamics of Ru(dcbpy)s(SCN)2 sensitized ZnO nanocrystalline thin films. Results show that the injection dynamics are highly nonexponential, suggesting the existence of a distribution of electron transfer rates for different sensitizer molecules even with less than one monolayer of sensitizers. The injection dynamics on ZnO are also found to be slower than those for the same sensitizer on TiO2.

Comparison of electron injection dynamics from re-bipyridyl complexes to Ti[O.sub.2] nanocrystalline thin films in different solvent environments

Article Abstract:

A comparison of photoinduced electron transfer (ET) rates to determine the solvent dependence of interfacial (ET) is presented. It is suggested that the presence of adsorbed water, increased the injection rate, reduced the band edge of Ti[O.sub.2] in these solvents and minimized the rate differences.
