Gauche-trans conformational changes in ethyl formate chemisorbed on Ni(111): coverage-dependent RAIRS spectra
Article Abstract:
Infrared reflectance spectra of ethyl formate on Ni(111) at 105 K were measured as a function of surface coverage. The reflectance absorbance infrared spectroscopy activities of various bands were observed to vary in a correlated manner as a function of coverage. The activity of both the asymmetric stretching vibration and the twisting vibration of the CH2 group at low coverages conclusively indicated that adsorption happens initially in the s-cis,gauche conformation. These two fade out on increasing the coverage and entirely removed at full monolayer coverage.

Methyl nitrite adsorption as a novel route to the surface methoxy intermediate
Article Abstract:
Methoxy species can be produced on reactive metal surfaces at low temperatures via thermal dissociation of an adsorbed precursor, methyl nitrite or (CH3ONO). The methoxy intermediate is strongly stabilized against thermal decomposition on tw Pt-Sn alloys, compared to Pt(111) where dissociation takes place at below 140 K. They also show a tremendous difference in selectivity for the products of methoxy decomposition compared to Pt(111). However, they do not form the CO and H2 dissociation products associated with methoxy chemistry on Pt(111).

Vibrational analysis of a chemisorbed polyatomic molecule: methoxy on Cu(100)
Article Abstract:
A normal-mode analysis of reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy data obtained for a range of isotopomers of methoxy on the Cu(100) surface is presented. The CO bond of methoxy/Cu(100) was found to be substantially perturbed relative to that of methanol.
