How small polar molecules protect membrane systems against osmotic stress: The urea-water-phospholipid system
Article Abstract:
The effects of osmolytes on lipid lamellar systems are examined through a thermodynamic characterization, particularly under conditions when the lipid system is under osmotic stress. Many experimental techniques, including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), sorption microbalance measurements, small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), are combined to characterize the structure and phase transitions at low water content and in excess solution.

NMR studies of molecular mobility in a DNA-amphiphile complex
Article Abstract:
The molecular mobility in a hexagonal DNA-cationic surfactant complex is investigated by using (super 1)H and (super 13)C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The NMR measurements indicate that in the dry state the alkyl chains of the surfactant have the properties of a disordered solid with internal motions of sufficient amplitude to substantially narrow the (super 1) resonance line from the rigid lattice limit.

A colorimetric study phospholipid hydration. Simultaneous monitering of enthalpy and free energy
Article Abstract:
A novel method for monitoring isothermal lipid hydration using a sorption microcalorimeter is presented. The versatility of this method is demonstrated by studies of the hydration of the phospholipids dipalmitoyl phosphatyl choline (DPPC), dimyristoyl phosphatidyl choline (DMPC), and dilauroyl phosphatidyle choline (DLPC) at 25 and 27 degree Celsius.
