Vietnam's per capita consumption of paints and varnishes is forecast to rise to 2 kg per year in the next five years from 0.3 kg in 1995. Total consumption in 1996 is estimated at 30,000 tonnes. Vietnam's production of architectural paints is forecast to grow at an annual rate of 15% in the next five years. Keen demand is forecast also for high-quality industrial coatings, of which there has so far been no local production. The production of alkyd and oil paints in 1996 is estimated at 10,000 tonnes, with Bach Tuyet Paint Co accounting for 40% of the total and Hanoi General Paint Co 20%. Jotun AS of Norway, Nippon Paint

A report by the Freedonia Group of Cleveland, US, predicts the worldwide demand for paints and coatings to grow at an annual rate of 2.1% in the 1997-2001 period from 21.85mn tonnes to 25.5mn tonnes, compared with 2% annually in 1988-96. In value terms, demand is forecast to grow 5.7% annually to US$ 72bn. Expected annual growth rates in 1997-2001 (1988-96) by region: Latin America, Caribbean 5.1% (5.4%) China 5% (6%) rest of Asia-Pacific 3.4% (7.4%) rest of the world 3.4% (-3.8%) North America, Mexico 3.2% (3.0%) Western Europe 2.6% (1.4%) Japan 0.7% (0.8%) Growth will be led by high solids and powder coatings.
