Low-energy electron-induced damage in hexadecanethiolate monolayers
Article Abstract:
Infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy, angle-resolved near edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and advancing water contact angle measurements have been used in studying the low-energy electron-induced damage in hexadecanethiolate (HDT) monolayers on gold substrates. HDT monolayers were exposed to electrons of energies 10-100 eV and doses of 30 to 14,000 microC/sq cm. Results indicate that damage on HDT monolayers starts immediately during the irradiation. COOH groups appear in the surface region after the irradiated films have been exposed to air.

Microscopic origin of the odd-even effect in monolayer of fatty acids formed on a graphite surface by scanning tunneling microscopy
Article Abstract:
The adsorption of monolayers of saturated fatty acids with various chain lengths into a graphite substrate was investigated using the scanning tunneling microscope. Experimental results showed that the molecules form centrosymmetrical dimers via hydrogen bonds between the carboxyl groups in the direction parallel to the molecular axis. The unit cell of fatty acids with an even number of carbons differs from that of the odd-numbered series, These findings provide evidence for a basic mechanism of the odd-even effects in the symmetry of alkyl chains.
