Nonideal elasticity in liquid crystals elastomers
Article Abstract:
An experiment is conducted that would allow to obtain the entropic and energetic components to the elastic restoring force, which shows that there are large deviations from ideal classical rubber elasticity, and the energetic contributions to the elastic restoring force can become comparable to the entropic contributions. It is concluded that the equation representing the elastic restoring force for classical polymer networks is used to separate out contributions arising from entropy and energy.

The effect of quasispherical solutes on the smectic-A-nematic and nematic-isotropic phase equilibria in p-n-alkyl-p'-cyanobiphenyl liquid crystals
Article Abstract:
Density as a function of temperature is measured in the nematic and isotropic phases in the immediate vicinity of the nematic-to-isotropic transition temperature [T(sub NI)] of p-n-hexyl-p'-cyanobiphenyl (6CB) and p-n-octyl-p'-cyanobiphenyl (8CB) and in the smectic-A and nematic phases in the immediate vicinity of the smectic-A-to-nematic transition temperature [T(sub AN')] of 8CB.
