Probing the anisotropic environment of thermotropic liquid crystals using Xe129 NMR spectroscopy
Article Abstract:
The anisotropic and isotropic phase transition of the thermotropic liquid crystal (LC), 4,4'-diheptylazoybenzene (HAB), is investigated through Xe129 NMR and density studies. An extended pairwise additive model to the smectic and nematic phases of HAB is applied to account for the temperature dependence of Xe129 chemical shifts and spin-lattice relaxation times (T1) of the xenon gas dissolved in HAB.

Behavior of liquid crystals confined to mesoporous materials as studied by [super 13]C NMR spectroscopy of methyl iodide and methane as probe molecules
Article Abstract:
The [super 13]C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of probe molecules methyl iodide and methane is used for examining the behavior of thermotropic nematic liquid crystals (LCs) Merck Phase 4 and ZLI 1115 confined to mesoporous controlled pore glass materials. The studies have shown that the first-order nematic-isotropic phase transition has taken place inside the restrictive hosts.

Testing assumptions about solute concentration dependence in liquid crystal NMR
Article Abstract:
Various solutes used as probes of liquid crystals orientation order having different concentrations were studied to analyze their NMR spectra as well as their zero-concentration properties. The analysis shows a brief agreement between the experiments for different solutes using two different scalings.
