Role of surface order on the total electric conduction in NLC samples
Article Abstract:
A nonstandard behavior of electric conductivity within some samples with NLC that can be associated with the local orientational order at the free surfaces of liquid crystals is presented. Considering the measured values, the conclusion states that the order in the free surface zone is planar for a depth of about 50(mu)m.

Effects of electrostatic interactions on orientational order of solutes in liquid crystals
Article Abstract:
A mean-field model for the analysis of electrostatic interactions in liquid crystal phases is presented. This model is used to predict orientational order parameters of some representative solutes, characterized by different shapes and charge distributions, dissolved in nematics with different dielectric permittivities.

Director fluctuations and ESR spectra: A slow-motional treatment
Article Abstract:
The ESR spectra of a spin probe dissolved in oriented phases needs a slow-motional treatment. The relative incidence of tumbling dynamics and director fluctuations on line widths is also investigated.
