Site populations and short range order in aluminosilicates investigated by (super 27)Al solid-state NMR

Article Abstract:

The (super 27)Al multiple quantum magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) with quadrupolar Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill echo train and FAM-II triple quantum to single quantum conversion pulses (MQ-QCPMG-MAS NMR) are used for the determination of site population in Al2Si2O5 kyanite and short range order parameters in CaAl2Si2O8 anorthite. A highly ordered anorthite was obtained by MQ-QCPMG-MAS NMR procedure, based upon the relative site populations.

[super 27]Al NMR study of the structure of lanthanum- and yttrium-based aluminosilicate glasses and melts

Article Abstract:

[super 27]Al nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is used for studying the compositions in the [Ln.sub.2][O.sub.3]-[Al.sub.2][O.sub.3]-Si[O.sub.2] (Ln = Y or La) ternary phase diagram. The results obtained both on glasses and in situ at high-temperature have indicated a preferential localization of [Ln.sup.3+] nearby tetra-coordinated aluminum species, with possible formation of tricluster and/or [Ln.sup.3+] coordination changes.

[.sub.89Y] magic-angle spinning of NMR of [Y.sub.2]T[i.sub.2-x]S[n.sub.x][O.sub.7] pyrochlores

Article Abstract:

The yttrium local environment in the series of pyrochlores [Y.sub.2]T[i.sub.2-x]S[n.sub.x][O.sub.7] was studied using [.sub.89Y] NMR. The use of a solid solution, which is anticipated to remain pyrochlore throughout, should enable to study changes in the local Y environment, free from effects related to phase transitions.
