Stable dimerized alkoxy species of 2-methylpropene on mordenite zeolite studied by FT-IR
Article Abstract:
Infrared spectroscopy was used to examine adsorption and reactions of 2-methylpropene (isobutene) on mordenite between 150 and 300 K. Depending on the sample temperature, two adsorption structures were found below 200 K. These were methyl-OD and pi-OD adsorptions, the former converted to the latter above 160 K. Above 200 K, the reaction of observed reaction product was assigned to the dimer 2,4,4-trimethyl-2-pentoxy species, which was very stable up to 300 K. The small energy barrier for migration of isobutene was regarded as the cause of the rapid dimerization without forming any stable monomeric tert-butoxy groups.

IR study of adsorption of olefins on deuterated ZSM-5
Article Abstract:
The adsorption characteristics of linear olefins on deuterated ZSM-5 was investigated below 180 K using IR spectroscopy. Below 160 K, three types of interactions were observed: (1) weak alkyl-BAS hydrogen bonding, (2) desorption from the BAS and migration on the wall of ZSM-5 by alkyl-framework interaction and (3) strong pi-BAS hydrogen bonding. The results of the experiment could be worthwhile for computer molecular dynamics simulation of hydrocarbon migration in zeolites.

Structure of dimerized alkoxy species of 2-methylpropene on zeolites and silica-alumina studied by FT-IR
Article Abstract:
Isobutene reacts on solid acid catalysts below room temperature to create dimeric alkoxy groups. It has been possible to identify the steric effect of the size of the pore of zeolite on the structure of the dimer alkoxy groups.
