Stepped silicon surfaces as templates for one-dimensional nanostructures
Article Abstract:
A demonstration on how near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy characterizes organic layers in atom- and orbital-specific fashion is presented with examples ranging from alkanes with customized end groups to DNA oligonucleotides. This technique measures transition from core levels to empty valence orbitals by applying it to a self-assembled monolayer containing an alkane backbone and an aromatic end group.

Saturated phospholipids with high melting temperatures form complexes with cholesterol in monolayers
Article Abstract:
An empirical connection between high melting temperatures of saturated phospholipid bilayers and the appearance of two upper miscibility critical points in cholesterol-phospholipid monolayers is described. A rough correlation is found between melting temperature and the composition of the complex. It is proposed that melting temperature is a convenient measure of the tendency of the phospolipid acyl chains to order.

Chemical modification of self-assembled monolayers by exposure to soft X-rays in air
Article Abstract:
The exposed and unexposed monolayers were characterized by using advancing-contact-angle measurements of water, ellipsometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). No significant differences in the thicknesses of the monolayers were observed under any exposure conditions.
