Structure and catalytic properties of magnesia-supported copper salts of molybdovanadophosphoric acid
Article Abstract:
The structure and stability of magnesia-supported copper salts of molybdovanadophosphoric acid ([Cu.sub.2]P[Mo.sub.11]V[O.sub.40]) are characterized by different techniques. High activity and selectivity of ([Cu.sub.2]P[Mo.sub.11]V[O.sub.40])/MgO catalyst for converting hexanol to hexanal are related to removal of vanadium from the Keggin unit after thermal treatment and gas phase selective oxidation to form lacunary species and autoreduction of [V.sup.5+] ions into [V.sup.4+] ions.

Role of defects in the nucleation and growth of Au nanoclusters on SiO2 thin films
Article Abstract:
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), in conjunction with the nucleation and growth of Au clusters, are used to identify and quantify various types of defects on ordered, SiO2 thin films grown on Mo(112). The results revealed on a low-defect surface, Au clusters nucleate and grow at line defects with metal deposition at room temperature, whereas deposition at 850 K leads to cluster decoration primarily at step edges.
