Structure and reactivity in Langmuir films of amphiphilic alkyl and thio-alkyl esters of alpha-amino acids at the air/water interface
Article Abstract:
The structure and reactivity of alkyl esters of several alpha-amino acids self-assembled at the air/water interface is investigated by grazing incidence X-ray diffractometry (GIXD) and matrix-assisted laser deesorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectroscopy (MALDI-TOF MS) techniques. The present studies, in contrast to previous reports, demonstrate that this reaction does not proceed beyond the dipeptide stage and hence cannot be regarded as a plausible system for the generation of prebiotic peptides.

Absolute orientation of molecules of amphiphilic alcohols in crystalline monolayers at the air-water interface
Article Abstract:
The absolute orientations of the amphiphilic molecules alpha-hydroxy omega-bromo alcohols BrCnH2n OH, n = 21, 22, and the alkyl hydroxy esters CmH(sub 2m+1)COO(CH2)OH, m = 14, 15, n = 10, in crystalline monolayer forms on water are determined, the former by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) and the latter by sum frequency generation (SFG). The SFG results are in agreement with reported GIXD and lattice energy analyses of the alkyl hydroxy esters m = 19, n = 9, 10.

Molecules adopting an inverted U-shape on the water surface by self-assembling into crystalline monolayers
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze molecules supporting an inverted U-shape on the water surface by self-assembling into crystalline monolayers. The experiments were performed on the liquid surface diffractometer. The monochromated X-ray beam was adjusted to maximize surface sensitivity. Experimental results indicated that the monolayer structures supported basic ribbon motif along the bi axis.
