Supramolecular assembly facilitating adsorbate-induced chiral electronic states in a metal surface
Article Abstract:
Optically active second-harmonic generation measurements (OA-SHG) have shown that the adsorption of amino acids cysteine and penicillamine from solution can induce chiral electronic states in an initially achiral polycrystalline Au film. The dependence of the chiral induction on COOH groups is found to be identical to that seen in studies of optical activity in chiral thiol-protected nanoparticles, indicating a common mechanism for the chiral perturbation in extended films and nanoparticles.

Bimolecular networks and supramolecular traps on Au(111)
Article Abstract:
The formation of intermixed phases and self assembled molecular templates on the Au(111) surface is demonstrated. Minority phases with more complex intermolecular junctions are observed and the results confirm that bimolecular templates could be realized on a range of substrates.
