Surface chemistry of SO2 on Zn and ZnO: photoemission and molecular orbital studies
Article Abstract:
The binding of sulphur with metal and oxide surfaces has extensive technological implications. The reaction of sulphur dioxide (SO2) with polycrystalline zinc oxide (ZnO) were examined at 100 and 300 K. The surface chemistry exhibited was compared to the interaction between SO2 and metallic Zn. The experiments were performed in ultrahigh vacuum chambers. It was observed that the absorption of SO2 on Zn surfaces were dissociative. The data demonstrate that SO2 does not dissociate to form atomic sulphur or oxygen on Zn surfaces at 100 K.
