Tetrapyrrole singlet excited state quenching by carotenoids in an artificial photosynthetic antenna
Article Abstract:
Two artificial photosynthetic antenna models consisting of a Si phthalocyanine (Pc) bearing two axially attached carotenoid moieties having either 9 or 10 conjugated double bonds are used to illustrate the functions of carotenoids in photosynthetic membranes. The results have suggested the association of either inner- or intramolecular charge-transfer species involving carotenoids during the process of excess energy dissipation in photosystem II.

Ultrafast energy transfer dynamics of a bioinspired dyad molecule
Article Abstract:
The bioinspired dyad molecule is studied by using time-resolved spectroscopies and its structure, spectrum and dynamics is compared to the LH2 complex from Rhodopseudomonas acidophila. The caroteno-purpurin dyad is found to be an ideal case for the coherent-control study, as it has a clear branching of the energy flow between two competing pathways leading to two different processes, energy transfer (ET) and loss channel (IC).

Electron transport properties of a carotene molecule in a metal-(single molecule) - metal junction
Article Abstract:
A recently developed method for tethering gold contacts to single molecules is used to measure the current versus voltage (I-V) data for single carotenedithiol molecules with a total length of 28 carbons. The I-V curves are relatively insensitive to contact probe force and cluster around integer multiples pf a fundamental curve, suggesting that members of the smallest set correspond to data obtained from a single molecule.
