Thermodynamics and Brewster angle microscopy studies of fatty acid/cholesterol mixtures at the air/water interface
Article Abstract:
Miscibility and interactions between the components of the cholesterol/fatty acid systems were studied basing on the analysis of surface pressure/area isotherms completed with Brewster angle microscopy images. The result reveals that the formation of the most stable 1:1 and 2:1 complexes between cholesterol and an unsaturated fatty acid molecule may account for the hypocholesterolemic effect of the acids in human organism by complexing free cholesterol.

Miscibility of amphotericin B-dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl serine mixed monolayers spread on the air/water interface
Article Abstract:
Sulphases of high ironic strenght (3 M aq. NaCl) were used to study the monolayers behavior in the collapse region. Under these conditions, the existence of two independent collapses were observed, the first corresponds to the ejection of AmB molecules from the surface, and another is related to the expulsion of the phospholipid. Both components were separated from he 2:1 AmB/DPPS complexes when the monolayer was compressed above 20 mN/m.

Titration of fatty acids in sugar-derived (APG) surfactants: A (super 13)C NMR study of the effect of headgroup size, chain length, and concentration on fatty acid pK(sub a) at a nonionic micellar interface
Article Abstract:
The experiment was conducted on tetradecanoic acid in a variety of sugar derived (APG) surfactants to monitor the chemical environment of the probe during titration with the base. The results show that there was an increase of approximately 2pK(sub a) units for the probe within the micellar system and there is no indication that the alkylglucoside surfactants are deprotonated at ph levels between 2 and 10.
