WORLD: FORECAST FOR COATINGS MARKET
Article Abstract:
A study by The Freedonia Group predicts the worldwide demand for paints and varnishes to grow at an annual rate of 2.8% in the 1998-2003 period, compared with 2.7% per year in 1993-98. Demand would thus rise to 25.84mn tonnes in 2003. In value terms, annual growth is estimated at 4.6%, with demand rising to US$ 80bn by 2003. The steepest growth rate, at 4.6% per year, is expected in Asia and Oceania, with sales in 2003 likely to reach 5.845mn tonnes. Demand in western Europe and North America is forecast to grow 2.1% annually to 6.45mn tonnes and 6.445mn tonnes, respectively. Sales in Japan are expected to grow 1.3% annually to 2.24mn tonnes. Demand in other regions is predicted to increase 3.1% per year to 4.86mn tonnes in 2003.

Article Abstract:
A study by London-based Information Research Limited predicts the European market for powder coatings to grow to 383,000 tonnes by 2004 from 303,000 tonnes in 1999. Growth will be driven by the automotive industry, while outdoor applications such as facade coatings, dominated in 1999. Steepest growth in powder coatings demand in Europe is expected in France, which currently accounts for about 10% of the European demand, behind Italy (30%), Germany (21%) and the UK (11%).

EUROPE: OUTLOOK FOR WATER-BORNE CAR COATINGS
Article Abstract:
DuPont Performance Coatings predicts demand for water-based automotive refinishes in western Europe to grow by almost 300% to more than 15,300 tonnes by year 2008. Currently water-based products account for no more than 6% of the market. DuPont aims to raise its share of the European water-based refinishes market to 40% by 2007. In 1999 the company held 30% of the west European market for automotive refinishes, while the PPG group held 24%.
