Authoring for the masses: ClickWorks & QuarkImmedia
Article Abstract:
Two new multimedia authoring software products, Pitango Multimedia's $1,290 ClickWorks 1.1 and Quark's $995 QuarkImmedia 1.0, promise to provide simple and powerful cross-platform authoring capabilities without having to do programming. ClickWorks is a multimedia construction program for Power Mac that has complete drag-and-drop support, and is focusd on providing high production values with an average amount of interactivity. ClickWorks has a very useful integrated text search function, but has drawbacks including lack of path-based animation, production quality problems, and a price tag too high for its power and production capabilities. QuarkImmedia 1.0 is marketed for its ability to produce media from the Internet, print sources, or discs. In reality, the software is primarily a Quark Xtension able to work with QuarkXpress to produce interactivity and multimedia for print products. The software is great for those in print publishing who work from QuarkXpress assets and production cycles, but not those outside of print publishing who want to use the tool for Internet multimedia.

Oracle forays into ITV authoring
Article Abstract:
Oracle is positioning itself as the primary provider of interactive television (ITV) software with its object-oriented authoring environment, Oracle Media Objects (OMO). OMO is designed to be portable across Macintoshes, PCs and set-top boxes without code changes. The tool may help developers go from CD-ROM to wide-area broadband networks. The software is available for Apple's set-top box, Microware's DAVID platform, and Scientific-Atlanta's PowerTV platform. Some developers who have seen demonstrations are skeptical, stating that the card-based metaphor has inherent design limitations. Other ITV authoring alternatives will emerge soon, including a specialized version of Macromedia Director designed to work with DAVID.
