The drive to keep IT systems running and making information available is the result of heightened competition in the banking sector. The reliance of banks on their IT systems is reflected in the $750-million deal between AT and T Solutions and Citibank calling for the conversion of the bank's networks into one and their monitoring from its location in Raleigh, NC.

APL works out roadmap for high availability

Transport logistics firm APL has reported that traffic at its website, www.apl.com, has jumped by 97% over a span of 18 months. The company's Web site allows customers to check APL's ship and train schedules, access information in the status and location of their goods in transit and download Web-based tracing reports in spreadsheet form. The innovative features enabled the Web site to generate traffic of 25,000 per month in the 2nd qtr 1998, from 6,000 per month in the 2nd qtr 1997.
