Checks and balances
Article Abstract:
Two Internet dilemmas show how government regulation is inferior at providing solutions than the marketplace. The first controversy involves balancing the ability to personalize information for efficiency and customer service, and the importance of respecting people's privacy. Currently, some Internet sites have been created that can track and store information about a user in order to deliver personalized service. The information is stored in the users' hard disk, but some have attacked the practice under the belief that companies should not be allowed to read or write local files without the consent of the user. New browsers set to be released and a proposed Open Profiling Standard by technology suppliers will remedy the situation without government involvement. But, in the second controversy, the copyright implications of HTTP links, the opposing players have decided to let the legal system set a ruling. Companies that aggregate news in a browser frame and hold users in their own server, and those that allow users to purchase tickets online from a link to event information are being accused of copyright infringement.

Our circuits are jammed
Article Abstract:
New developments in media technology allow large amounts of information to be conveyed to viewers, but these changes are less important than the quality of the transmitted information. Digital-media producers should be responsible for helping viewers filter through vast amounts of information by establishing standards and practices that will help the delivery of quality information. This effort will also ensure the future quality of digital media efforts. Push media offers digital media producers an excellent opportunity to focus on the content and delivery of informative programming that will make a difference. It is likely to make online media a successful commercial endeavor by generating the large viewership and loyalty typically associated with television.

A dose of reality
Article Abstract:
Many Web enthusiasts of years past are viewing the technology with a bit more sobriety these days. Lessons learned include: trial and error provides insight into the Web market and a family of small, narrowly targeted sites makes more sense than one huge site. Web publishing is at least as costly as more traditional media, as software development and increased publication frequency drive up costs. The Web does some things better than others; for example, aggregating information from multiple sources rather than running long articles. More so than with other communication products, the medium is the message with the Web. Partnerships and alliances are a key to Web success.
