Doing your homework
Article Abstract:
A recent study done by Dataquest showed that the provision of a single point of contact was the most important requirement demanded by end users from computer hardware service providers. Second was financial stability followed by the ability to offer a lower price. National or international coverage was deemed by end users to be the least important factor. The key to being a good single contact for the service vendor is never to resort to finger pointing. Hardware problems are problems that should be fixed by the service vendor.

Keeping IT simple
Article Abstract:
The hardware services industry is moving toward simplicity in contract offering to reduce the costs associated with too many service options. This is because customers are carefully evaluating their hardware maintenance contract needs. In providing these needs, companies should offer only two types of contracts, namely mission-critical, with 24x7 coverage and at least a four-hour response time, and standard. A third option is non-critical, return-to-vendor service.

Who really won the PC warranty wars?
Article Abstract:
IBM's introduction of a three-year, 24-by-seven on-site warranty on its line of personal computer (PC) servers in Sep 1992 was to begin a warranty war among major PC manufacturers. As a result, nearly all PC makers provide three-year warranties in 1997, with some warranties being better than others. However, increased warranty lengths have not won any PC company significant market share and most firms have opted to offer warranty upgrades to attract buyers.
