New euro monetary unit adds twist to tough ECR, POS market
Article Abstract:
Manufacturers of electronic cash register (ECR) terminals and point-of-sale (POS) systems are due to face a huge challenge with the introduction of the euro monetary unit. ERC and POS system producers are inclined to adapt to the European market, which will use the euro in 1999, with notes and coins set to enter circulation in 2002. Meanwhile, Industry leaders such as Sharp, TEC and Casio are adopting differing strategies and improving their products to remain competitive and capture the interest of their markets.

Pentium processor powers up CDS's point-of-sale products
Article Abstract:
Commercial Data Systems Ltd of Japan has introduced its TouchPOS TP6100 series of point-of-sale equipment. The product features built-in 12.1-in thin-film transistor or double super-twisted nematic color LCD touch screen, and an ELO AccuTouch panel. It also provides a clerk key I-button and offers a built-in network through 10Base-T Ethernet ports. The POS comes with a flash ROM for the basic input-output system, a 2KB flash memory for the CMOS data backup, a 24x-speed CD-ROM and a PCI Bus slot.
