Fast data transfer...if you can get it to work
Article Abstract:
Trans Digital's $149 Trans PC Card comes saddled with a poor setup procedure and mediocre documentation. Trans Digital suggests that the Universal Parallel Port Card should be used for fast file transfers between PCs or between a PC and a peripheral. Obtaining fast speeds requires use of the bundled cabling. Unfortunately, the installation software only runs on DOS. Editing the config.sys file proves necessary; nevertheless, one dissatisfied user could never get the Trans PC Card to work properly. Trans Digital's president, who apparently doubles as the technical support department, is of little help. A recent rewrite of the manual gives explicit instructions for installing under Windows 95. Nevertheless, getting the Trans PC Card to run properly once it is installed is still far too difficult.

Ositech deals some Trump cards
Article Abstract:
Ositech Communications introduces its $210 Trumpcard Five of Diamonds and $249 Trumpcard Seven of Diamonds, a pair of multifunction PC Cards that are designed to aid the process of using remote and mobile digital technology. The 33.6-Kbps data/14.4-Kbps modem Five of Diamonds works in conjunction with digital phones but requires additional communications software in order to offer the degree of ease-of-use that many users expect. The Seven of Diamonds provides users with 10/100 BaseTX Ethernet support, but the adapter installs suitably well in only certain notebook computers. The Seven offers dual support for Ethernet and Fast Ethernet network environments, includes an RJ-45 connection cable and offers features for the reduction of power consumption.

Making the most of your PC Cards...on your desktop
Article Abstract:
SCM Microsystems' $89 SwapBox Lite and $119 SwapBox Classic PC Card adapters make it easy for users to exchange data between a laptop computer and a desktop system. SwapBox Lite provides a rear PC Card slot and the Classic slips into a front drive bay and provides two PC Card slots. The rear slot solution is more economical but harder to access. Both PC Card adapters are easy to install under Windows 95 because they do not require additional hardware and support plug and play. Also, the devices do not require an IRQ (interrupt) under Windows 95, which helps when several cards are housed in the system. Both SwapBox devices can be used under Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows 3.x and DOS.
