From position as king of scanners, Mustek looks to expand realm

Taiwan-based Mustek Corp. has grown to become a leading supplier of scanners in the world. The company was formed in 1988 by a group of engineers, which includes the company's existing Chairman and CEO Eric Chen. The company's first 1,200dpi flatbed scanner was introduced in 1993 under the Mustek brand. Although the company specializes in scanners, it has slowly expanded into products related to three-dimensional image processing. The company was the first Taiwanese company to launch a digital camera in March 1997. The company's latest innovative product is the Mustek VDC-200 digital camera.

As cable assembly supplier, Unixtar forms solid links with customers

Unixtar Technology said the formula for success consists in catering to the customers' needs, ensuring product quality and adjusting lead times. The Taiwan-based manufacturer of cable products and network assemblies provides Korean firms with one-third of their monitor cable requirements. Unixtar, which was founded as an OEM maker in 1986, counts clients in North America, Japan, Europe and other regions including Korea. The firm said annual sales grew to $40 million in 1996 from $24 million in 1995. A 35% growth in sales is expected for fiscal 1997.
