How Fujitsu Goes for the Top in Japan's Computer Business
Article Abstract:
Fujitsu is leading IBM in mainframe computer sales in Japan. Sales of the FACOM 9450-II are high. Fujitsu prevailed over IBM because of the cooperation of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry which has sought to stimulate industry growth. Fujitsu moved into microcomputers when many FACOM users linked them to micros. The latest product is the FACOM 9450-II. Direct sales companies and outside sales organizations make up the 260 selling companies. Fujitsu believes that IBM inadvertently helped sales of the 9450 by promoting personal computers. The FM series of personal computers is also doing well. The FM-11 AD2 is described as being an especially powerful 8-bit computer. Peripheral development is expected to increase. Fujitsu's decision to move into computer development in the 1950s proved correct. Exports have risen to 219.6 billion yen. A diagram of company history is included. Photographs of Fujitsu executives are included.
