Magnetic Storage Media's Continuing Evolution
Article Abstract:
Increasing transfer speed and density has remained the primary objective in enhancing the design of magnetic recording hardware and media for sequential access (computer tape) or for random access (disk). The present day floppy disks combine the best features of computer tape and random access rigid disks. Despite innovations in storage media, such as cobalt, chrome, nickel, and various other mixes, the rotating magnetic disk will probably be the dominant technology because of its broad computer applications. By the year 2000, however, the development of optical recording by use of laser beams could have the potential to vie with magnetic recording as the type of technology most applicable to all levels of computers. A chart is provided that shows, from 1953 to 1984, the growth of bytes per inch available along a standard 2400-foot tape reel. Photographs of currently available storage products are also included.

Understanding Magnetic Media
Article Abstract:
An understanding of magnetic media is necessary before a consumer can determine which type of tape to purchase. A durable tape should be able to withstand abrupt starts and stops as well as other forms of stress. Error-free tape is a misleading term, but a buyer should pay close attention to the methods used by the manufacturers to test their tapes. A mismatching of tapes often produces high error rates. An imperfection on the tape surface will cause a dropout or momentary loss of information. In addition, touching, bending, stacking, exposing, or writing upon tapes will produce minor imperfections which result in errors. Magnetic exposure and exposure to extremes in temperature also damage tapes. Finally, warranties should be examined before purchasing a tape.

Automation Outlook: Rookies Need Different Training than Veterans for OA Understanding
Article Abstract:
The proliferation of multifunction economical microcomputers has attracted new types of users, including managers and those adding new technologies to their repertoire. Advanced hardware and communications systems development have accompanied the breakup of AT & T. The Office Automation Conference, to be held February 20-22, 1984, in Los Angeles, will have programs oriented toward special user groups-operations managers, technology managers, product designers and developers, analysts, and user-plus functional issues.
