Multimedia presentation software comes of age
Article Abstract:
Macromedia's $199 Action 3.0 for Windows provides an easy way to add motion to a presentation. Action's outliner can transfer text directly to a scene, and it includes a superior charting program that lets users graphically select data and chart types, as well as animate charts. Alpha Software's $119 Bravo 2.0 media integrator offers much multimedia for the price. It lacks some of the precise control over synchronization that other programs provide, but does very well at managing slide shows. Micrografx's $299 Charisma presentation software lets users build a presentation by selecting a master style and constructing slides in layers. The charting module has a different, more confusing interface, and its multimedia features are not as complete. WordPerfect's $395 WordPerfect Presentations 3.0 is a weak multimedia offering. Although it has strong drawing tools, it offers few transitions. It has no dedicated slide-build utility, and it comes with a limited set of templates.

Dynamic design and slick software
Article Abstract:
Art Technology Group (ATG) develops Web sites as well as the Web development technology used by other companies. This two-pronged business strategy has helped the company expand from a two person start-up into an organization of over 100 employees. Company founders view the service division as a way of determining what technology and ideas are in demand. The software development division then implements these concepts into products. ATG's popular Dynamo application server responds to demand for dynamic Web pages. Dynamo helps site developers establish long-term relationships with customers by finding out what users are interested in and then providing them with personalized ads and product selections. To supply these dynamic pages, ATG's Dynamo server works with the Web server to handle session tracking and database connectivity.

Reel to real-video assets
Article Abstract:
Media asset-management solutions are important tools for video-production houses, corporations and studio that utilize video footage. Virage's Video Cataloger is one such solution. It breaks a video clip into meaningful elements and is able to analyze in real time as video comes off an analog tape or satellite feed to be fed to a capture card. Other options include ISLIP's MediaKey Logger and MediaKey Builder, which broadcasters find useful. MediaKey Builder has automated archiving that provides a detailed index of the video. Excalibur is expanding from the text-search-and-retrieval market into media asset-management, with an emphasis on the technology side of video cataloging.
