New devices crop up, diversify POS system options
Article Abstract:
Japanese consumers are seeing the emergence of new devices that lead to a diversification of options offered by point-of-sale (POS) systems and electronic cash registers (ECRs). SanDisk Corp.'s new FlashDrives is touted to offer better reliability and flexibility than rival technologies, while eliminating a need for moving parts. The new product utilizes the company's flash memory and controller technologies and comes in 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch versions. Seiko Instruments Inc.'s Order Shuttle Neosweet is touted as a new POS system that combines ordering, menu changing and accounting features. Article Abstract:
Sharp Corp. is counting on strong markets outside Japan for double-digit growth in electronic cash registers (ECRs) and point-of-sale (POS) systems. Instead of its own architecture, the company hopes to adopt open POS models that operate on WindowsNT. Sharp will roll out new ECRs while it preserves its current full-range of offering. Yoshiaki Imanishi, General Manager of Products Planning in the System Products Department for the Personal Computer Division within Sharp's Systems Group, said the firm sells POS systems directly and ECRs through dealers in markets outside Japan.
