Newfire carries VRML torch
Article Abstract:
Newfire's Torch browser plug-in and Architect authoring software combine to produce a rapid development tool for use in 3D Web environments that perform up to six times faster than other VRML 2.0-compliant content. Torch is capable of browsing 3D worlds at 10fps in typical game environments and can operate on frame sizes as large as 640 by 580. Torch is also well suited to reliable and smooth VRML playback for such applications as online ticket ordering and virtual retailing. Torch is able to work at such high speeds because it incorporates a fast rendering engine that exploits hardware acceleration where possible, and it has Visible Scene Manager to get rid of parts of a scene that are not needed before sending the visible parts to the 3D engine. Newfire's companion authoring software to Torch, called by the code name Architect, can generate VRML from files exported from 3D modelers.

Getting the genie in and out of the bottle
Article Abstract:
A buyers' guide presents a listing of over 30 SCSI cards and provides detailed comparisons of SCSI, EIDE, Ultra SCSI and SCSI-2 technologies. SCSI cards offer users high burst-data rates; high, sustained rates of data transfer; and the flexibility of being able to connect multiple devices to one bus. These features make SCSI a good fit for multimedia producers. Ultra SCSI runs at twice the speed and offers the fastest technology around for internal buses. The various versions of the SCSI standards each offer something that is a little better than the previous version, although Fast and Wide SCSI-2 cards are quite popular with multimedia users due to their high data throughput.

VRML 2.0 takes flight.(new version of Virtual Reality Modeling Language brings 3D to the Web; includes related article on VRML 1.0) (Internet
Article Abstract:
Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) is a new language that is providing the World Wide Web with 3D virtual reality. Version 1.0 is a text-based language used to describe 3D on the Web. However, it has limitations that include access only to static images. Browsers provide the key to viewing VRML scenes, and different browsers offered different capabilities. With VRML version 2.0 due in the summer of 1996, a new set of tools are set to be available, possibly rendering HTML a thing of the past. Version 2.0 is slated to offer the video, audio, and interactivity that users have come to expect from virtual reality.
