Toshiba Libretto, Psion Series 5, Nimatics Persona
Article Abstract:
The Toshiba Libretto Pentium-based subnotebook computer comes with a 75MHz processor, 16MB of RAM, a 540MB hard disk drive and an active matrix color display that measures six inches across. The major drawback of the machine is its tiny keyboard. The keyboard is too small to allow for comfortable touch-typing, and is even difficult to type with using the hunt-and-peck method. The device is also hampered by a lack of memory. The Nimantics Persona proved to be a superior subnotebook. Measuring about the size of a trade paperback book, the computer has a Pentium processor and an active matrix color screen. The notebook weighs less than three pounds, but has a keyboard that is easier to manage than the Libretto, and has useful connectors for and external microphone, keyboard or mouse. The hand-held device of the group, the Psion Series 5, proved to be good performer. The device comes with a usable touch-typable keyboard, Windows CE software, and a touch screen stylus.

HP's $899 620LX hand-held computer has an excellent crisp, clean color display and is particularly recommended for presentations. If an optional VGA-out card is inserted, the 620LX can be connected to display on a larger PC screen, or a connection through a converter works with many televisions. The 620LX uses Windows CE 2.0 as an operating system. It comes with 16MB of system memory, which can be expanded with CompactFlash memory cards while leaving the PC Card slot free. A standard suite of applications is provided, including pocket versions of Word and Excel. PowerPoint is available for presentations.
