Sharp Electronics' $3,199 Sharp PC-9300T Pentium-based notebook provides competitively high performance rates that are suitable for all but the most demanding of computer tasks. The PC-9300T includes an 11.3-in color active matrix display, a 33.6-Kbps modem, a 1.44GB hard drive, 16MB of RAM, a 150MHz Pentium CPU, a 10x CD-ROM drive, a floppy drive and support for 16-bit stereo sound. The PC-9300T also includes a 4MB infrared port, dual PCMCIA ports and connectors for serial, PS/2, VGA output and parallel ports, and the PC-9300T supports one Type III or two Type II PC Cards. The keyboard includes standard-sized function keys, a diverse range of pre-installed software and superior support for video playback. The nickel-metal hydride battery provides nearly three hours of use.

ARM Computer's TS97MX is a powerful, top-of-the-line Pentium-based notebook. A $3,899 configuration features a 200MHz Pentium MMX processor, 80MB of expandable RAM, 3GB hard disk, eight-speed CD-ROM drive, lithium-ion battery, sharp and responsive 12.1-in active-matrix LCD display, 16-bit sound card and dual speakers.The keyboard feels good, with an intuitive key layout that includes a Windows 95 key and a special key that functions as a right mouse button. The TS97MX comes with bi-directional parallel port, docking port,infrared port, high-speed serial port, PS/2 port, game port, microphone jack and stereo audio in and out jacks. The display, which has a maximum resolution of 1,024-by-768 pixels, supports VGA, NTSC and PAL output.

Acer America's $1,999 AcerNote Light 382 notebook is based on a 150MHz Pentium processor and includes 16MB of EDO RAM, expandable to 64MB, a 10x CD-ROM drive, 11.3-inch DSTN SVGA display and a 1.38GB hard disk drive. A zoomed video capability and 1MB of video RAM support 256 color with 800x600 resolution. The keyboard is not full-size, but is not difficult to use and includes standard Windows 95 keys. The notebook lacks an IR port, but this should not be an issue unless wireless connections are needed. The package includes LapLink software and a cable for linking two computers. Acer offers excellent toll-free, 24-hour support. The notebook includes a wide variety of software, including games.
