Systems in Action: Telecommunications Service Slashes Accounting Costs in Half
Article Abstract:
Since 1973, Automatic Data Processing (ADP) has been handling the payroll, general ledger, and financial statements for the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce. The batch processing mode changed to on-line when the Chamber purchased an IBM PC and linked up with ADP. Now the data is sent weekly or oftener to ADP. Cash flow analyses, management reports, and financial statements are sent monthly or on demand to the Chamber. The system is more cost effective than buying a computer and hiring a clerk. Jean Hughes, financial executive, uses the PC to prepare the budget and for business forecasting, and plans to handle the budget for the Chamber's subsidiaries.

Management Counsel: Telecommunications
Article Abstract:
The proliferation of microcomputers in the home has resulted in network security problems and problems affecting the operations of value-added networks, public data networks and the planned open system interconnection model. Networks can be secured with hard- wired or direct-connected terminals or by making the network private. Data encryption units can also cut down on illegal access, although the units are expensive. Passwords may also be used to restrict access, but they are only effective if they are used for limited periods of time. Software and hardware for network security is on the market.

Proposed FCC Ruling Would Drastically Reduce Telecommunications Costs, Expert Predicts Computer 'Explosion'
Article Abstract:
Telephone companies must now go through a separate company to operate packet-switching equipment. Many have asked the Federal Communications Commission to allow them to operate the equipment directly. Users of small computers would then be able to access computerized data bases at a much lower cost than is currently charged.
