Tame your frames in real time with turnkey systems
Article Abstract:
Avid's $28,995 MCXpress is the best real-time video editing system of the four evaluated, and perhaps the best on the market. MCXpress' simplified interface has a a resizable monitor, and allows the user to exchange clips, bins, timeline sequences and media files for the least expensive price. Fast's $29,995 Video Machine Digital Player/Recorder (VM-DP/R) Portable Quad is an excellent choice, offering the most frequently used hybrid editor, on-location digital disk recorder, and previewer in the field. Panasonic's PostBox 2.0 features the unique ability to place real-time titles over a video layer with transitions. NewTek's $12,995 Video Toaster Flyer is the perfect choice for Video Toaster owners. Video Toaster Flyer is the least expensive means of obtaining sophisticated video production while offering tightly integrated tools for titles, graphics and 3D animation. Resolution of digital video effects is compromised, and the interface is highly unconventional.

MPEG 1 encoding systems: the best quality per byte
Article Abstract:
Seven MPEG encoders are described and tested: 3DO's MPEG Encoder ($29,995), IPC Technologies' DVMS-5000 MPEG Lab Suite ($30,385), Optibase's MPEG Lab Pro ($14,995), OptImage's Delta Vc ($29,995) and Delta Vx ($75,000), Optivision's OptiVideo ($15,895), and Smart & Friendly's Creation Station Deluxe with XingCD ($4,699). The systems come with separate encoder and decoder cards, except Xing, which encodes in software. Important aspects in selecting encoding hardware are the types of video and audio inputs, whether the video and audio inputs can be adjusted or preprocessed, whether there is a preview mode, and whether the output is only NTSC PAL or also goes to the VGA screen. IPC Optibase MPEG Lab Suite and OptImage Delta Vx are rated 'awesome'; 3DO Real-Time MPEG Encoder and Optibase MPEG Lab Pro are rated 'thumbs up'; and OptImage Delta Vc, Optivision OptiVideo, and Smart & Friendly Creation Station Deluxe are rated 'does the job.'

The softer side of MPEG
Article Abstract:
Many video choices are available for developers adding digital video to their multimedia programs. The MPEG 1 video codec standard, created by the Motion Picture Experts Group, is optimized for 1.5 Mbps playback. MPEG is catching on, and now 40 companies are offering MPEG decoders, mostly integrated into consumer-level graphics cards. The low-cost MPEG decoding software from Xing Technology will facilitate more widespread usage of the format. Its quality is superior to most, with a 30 fps display and a 320x240 video interpolated to full screen. The main attraction of software MPEG is its extremely low cost, expected to be under $5. The Xing MPEG Player will be bundled with several companies' display cards. Other companies are working on their own software MPEG formats, which will ultimately increase consumer awareness of MPEG.
