The making of Obsidian
Article Abstract:
Rocket Science revamped its development strategies in an effort to make its Obsidian CD-ROM game a more successful venture than its first three game titles. The first change involved facilitating communication between graphics and engineering production by using an authoring tool that both artists and programmers could use for rapid prototyping. Producer Matthew Fassberg chose mFactory's mTropolis because of its intuitive object-oriented capabilities and interactive music features. Headspace created the sound and music for the software that responds seamlessly to player's actions. Development of the game environment was challenged by high employee turnover and no product design document. Development was facilitated with regular group testing of the navigation and puzzle design efforts.

Access Software: Utah's digital Hollywood

Access Software's two product lines make it a relatively small member of the PC gaming community, but its titles continue to attract attention. The company's latest product iterations typically work best on the highest-level PC platform, and many users will upgrade their systems to optimize and enhance their gaming performance. The company's first 3D adventure, Under a Killing Moon, was released in 1994 after two and a half years of development. Its latest 3D offering, Pandora Directive, offers greater detail and a Hollywood script. Access took three and a half years to develop and perfect its product techniques and software tools and is now prepared to focus on script writing, film production and game design. Access is now planning to prepare for DVD.

Banner Blue Software decided to move its Family Tree Maker software on to the Web and create a niche portal site for users. To do this, the company created a comprehensive search service that includes a virtual community, hoping that users will be compelled to return. The site, FamilyTreeMaker.com is the best and deepest genealogy community and portal on the Internet, offering users a hierarchical index of 40,000 genealogy Web sites, a genealogy-specific search engine and indexes to all Banner Blue's disc, which contain data on 170 million individuals. The company is constantly experimenting with its Web business model, currently charging users for a set amount of time and providing unlimited use during that time.
