The right way to set up shop
Article Abstract:
Small retail operations may find renting an E-commerce storefront to be the best approach to establishing an online operation. Companies that have in-house Web programming talent may establish a full-time Internet connection and host their own Web services. The first step is to select an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and choose a suite of e-commerce applications. All Web storefronts need a secure Web server, Web authoring software, a searchable product catalog, a shopping cart program to handle orders, a payment processor that is connected to a bank account, and a store reporting system to handle orders, shipments, taxes and a variety of other issues.

Community is a commodity
Article Abstract:
Online communities attract traffic to a Web site, promote electronic commerce and foster ideas. The first step in adding an online community to a Web site is to decide on the focus of the site and its scope. Adding a guest book or starting an e-mail newsletter is a good way to begin. Polls, group calendars and a listserve can be added next. When traffic increases a message board can be added or chat and instant messaging features. A site needs 2,500 daily visitors to support a message board area, where 55,000 daily visitors are needed to support chat.

E-marketer; know thy customer
Article Abstract:
Web sites now provide marketing information to retailers since customer habits can be tracked more precisely while shopping on the internet. Also, companies can identify their best customers. Information gathered from consumer Web sites can then be used to develop marketing techniques and gear campaigns more accurately to customer demands. This information gathered from the Web can then crossover to non-Web-based transactions.
