Top-of-the-line handheld computers feature SVGA LCDs
Article Abstract:
Toshiba Corp.'s Libretto 100 series of handheld computers are among the first handheld computers to feature wide-screen SVGA-compatible, 7.1-in thin-film transistor (TFT) color LCDs. The LCD has resolution of 800 x 480 dots and displays up to 16.77 million colors, allowing it to display 1.25 times more information than the display of the previous Libretto70. Moreover, both models feature Intel's low-energy consumption 166MHz Pentium Processor with MMX technology. Other features include a 2.1GB hard disc drive, a 14.5mm-pitch keyboard and a resume function allowing users to get back to the most recenlty active data after operations start.

Handheld computers contain 10MB memory, 33.6Kbps modem

Sharp Corp.'s latest Power Zaurus handheld computers feature personal data map viewer and address book software that is better than the previous models'. The MI-600 Power Zaurus series incorporates a 10MB memory and a modem speed of 33.6Kbps. The computers are available in two models: the MI-610DC ($1,273), which has a built-in 350,000-pixel progressive scan CCD camera card; and the MI-610 ($985), which does not have a camera card. Both models feature a backlit 320 x 240-dot 4.3-in thin-film transistor (TFT) color LCD able to display 65,536 colors.

Hitachi's Persona commands handheld computer market in Japan

Hitachi Ltd of Japan's Persona HPW-30PA has enjoyed widespread demand since its launch in the Japanese market in May 1999. The company has rolled out its series of Persona handheld computers as it believes that the mobile personal digital assitant market in Japan will amount to roughly 10 trillion yen by 2003. The market was worth 300 billion yen in 1998. Hitachi expects women to account for roughly 60% of the sales of the newest Persona product, the HPW-50PA.
