VRML 2.0 tools aim at 3D multi-user interactivity
Article Abstract:
Several Web browser and Web server software packages supporting VRML 2.0, including four products from Oz Interactive, were presented at Internet World, held during the week of Apr 29, 1996, in San Jose. Oz Interactive's Oz Virtual Browser for Windows and Oz Virtual Server together let users choose from avatars and give them realistic facial expressions and motions with the help of a built-in editor. They also offer real-time chat capability and 3D sounds, and the browser client includes a 3D help angel that responds with text-to-speech answers to questions asked in natural language. Oz also demonstrated products for children, including PLAY3D and Soft2VRML. Integrated Data Systems debuted its Media Server for Windows NT beta. It is intended for the corporate market, and it supports Live-Audio audio chat and text chat. Other products introduced at the show include Virtus's 3-D Website Builder and Cadkey Inc's SiteSculptor.

CBT tools take on the Web
Article Abstract:
Four computer-based training authoring packages in development will ship before fall, 1997. Macromedia's $2,495 Authorware 4.0 is scheduled for released in the second quarter of 1997. Embedded ActiveX controls can handle streaming video, spreadsheets, word processors and Web pages. Authorware 4 also includes ODBC support to access databases across a network and can embed Web links and links to external media elements. Allen Communication's Quest 6.0 will also be an ActiveX server with the ability to include plug-ins and embed Quest applications in other programs. Aimtech's CBT Express 2.0, like ToolBook II Assistant, will have wizard-based authoring and templates. Training modules written with either of these applications will be accessible with a Web browser. Asymetrix's ToolBook II Assistant will be a first choice for distance learning, but the Internet support for Quest may be more limited.

WebPainter 2.0
Article Abstract:
Totally Hip Software's $89.95 WebPainter 2.0 is a powerful animation program that includes excellent documentation along with an efficient starter graphics set. WebPainter 2.0 features versatile file format support and can import QuickTime and Photoshop as well as standard JPEG, GIF and PICT formats. The package also enables users to choose download times for animations at various bandwidths. WebPainter is superior to existing freeware and shareware tools and it is simpler to use than competitive products. The tool's onionskinning capabilities simplify animation modifications by allowing users to view ghost versions of previous or subsequent animation frames. Although WebPainter's performance is usually good, importing QuickTime movies that are greater than 1MB commonly produces out-of-memory errors on Macintoshes.
