Buyer beware
Article Abstract:
The UK government has chosen Tarmac to take over its Department of the Environment's design group PSA Projects. Tarmac will receive a 49.75 million pounds sterling dowry to cover risks, such as redundancy payments. Tarmac has made a loss of 15.1 million pounds sterling in the year to Sep 1992. The terms mean that Tramac will have to take on a minimum of 925 staff out of Projects' 1,800. Tarmac aims to create a one-stop construction service called Tarmac Construction Professional Services. The terms bring 400 contracts to Tarmac worth an estimated 85 million pounds sterling between 1993-95.

Forecast blunders revealed
Article Abstract:
Construction Forecasting and Research, Building Materials Producers and Barclays Bank, the UK's three leading construction forecasters, have produced forecasts for industry output which have been incorrect by 1 billion pounds sterling a year since 1988, according to former forecaster Martin Hewes, head of consultancy Hewes and Associates. The most serious mistakes were made when the forecasters failed to predict the extent of the rapid growth in 1988 and of the market decline in 1991.

JCT near collapse, say members
Article Abstract:
The Joint Contracts Tribunal (JCT), which produces standard contracts for the construction industry, is facing serious splits over planned reforms, and could even collapse altogether. The main problem is the inability of contractors and subcontractors to agree on Sir Michael Latham's proposals for non-adversarial forms of contract. There is now pressure to hold a crisis meeting to resolve the dispute.
