Construction managers wanted
Article Abstract:
The 40 million pounds sterling conversion of Bankside power station to the Tate Gallery for Modern Art and the 60 million pounds sterling refurbishment of the Royal Albert Hall will be among work worth 200 million pounds sterling in central London for which construction managers will be tendering soon. Possible construction managers on the Bankside project include Schal, Mace and John Laing, while the Royal Albert Hall plans to appoint a single construction manager in order to minimise periods during which the facility will have to be closed.

Contractors split on monetary union: the construction industry is divided over whether a single currency will be good or bad for business
Article Abstract:
The construction industry is uncertain about how European monetary union will affect it. It is expected that building materials will be cheaper but it could also mean that foreign companies will find it easier to win contracts in the UK. Some believe that public sector work in the UK could improve under a single currency, although not through the Private Finance Initiative. Contractors are more concerned about the European Union's Working Time Directive, restricting the working week.

Can the Construction Bill be avoided?
Article Abstract:
The Construction Bill has cleared the report stage in the Commons and is almost law. It aims to define construction contracts as agreement to undertake construction operations, covering nearly all construction activity. The use of adjudication to resolve disputes may become a lucrative new profession after the bill becomes law, and the Constructors' Liaison Group has ensured that adjudicators will have legal immunity from prosecution by parties involved in a dispute.
