Fort Lauderdale show keeps growing

The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in Florida from Oct 28, 1999- Nov 1, 1999, has continued to attract big crowds, with exposition manager Yachting Promotions' president, Kaye Pearson, predicting that overall show attendance would surpass 120,000 visitors. The first day of the show drew large numbers of visitors who could have waited one day to pay less than 50% of the $25 ticket reserved for well respected industry show goers. The show exhibited more than 1,400 boats with a collective, estimated value of $1.5 billion.

'Made in China' loses its stigma

The China trade is attractive for boatbuilders who are lured to the country's cheap labor and lower costs. Yard wages of $20 to $50 a week are the norm in the country, depending on the facility's proximity to Hong Kong. The farther away the yard, the lower the wages. Labor advantage translates into savings of $70,000 to $80,000 to a buyer against a comparable boat built in the US. Chinese yards, thus are rolling out reputable boats at lower costs and exporting them to the US and every other part of the world.

Megayachts edging out little guys for slip space
Article Abstract:
Waterfront and slip space at Fort Lauderdale, FL, marinas are increasingly becoming a scarce commodity as megayachts grow in popularity within the boating community. Megayachts account for 800 boatyard visits annually in Fort Lauderdale, with an average of $236,000 being spent by each megayacht boatowner each year at city yards. However, on boatyard owner noted that Fort Lauderdale will need more room for all types of boats if it desires to remain the yachting capital of the world.
