Do-not-call bill passes MO House, Senate
Article Abstract:
The Missouri Legislature has passed a joint resolution that would make the state the 11th to have a do-not-call list. The bill, which was passed by a joint committee of the Missouri House and Senate on May 12, 2000, still requires the approval of Gov Mel Carnahan before it becomes law. H.B. 1172 or S.B. 763 requires the state attorney general to establish and operate a do-not-call list by Jul 1, 2001, and levies fines of as much as $5,000 for firms that will violate the law.

H&R Block expects to use fewer call center workers next tax season
Article Abstract:
Kansas City, MO-based tax processing computer services provider H and R Block expects to hire 15%-18% fewer workers for the 2001 tax season than it did in 1999 because of new technology systems, a cross-training program and the consolidation of its call center facilities. The firm combined its three call centers in fall 1999 into a single facility near its headquarters. With one single call center facility, the company expects to cross-train employees who will then be able to provide more than one type of support service as the need arises.

Bill seeks to ban mailing of live checks
Article Abstract:
A legislation has been introduced in the US House of Representatives seeking to ban the mailing of live checks. Live checks refer to loan checks that are mailed directly to consumers. Rep John LaFalce (D-NY), author of the bill, said the checks charge unusually high interest rates as high as 25% and are sometimes sent to people who cannot repay them. Some industry observers, however, say the legislation is not expected to make any progress in 1999.
