Law and order
Article Abstract:
UK law firm Taylor Johnson Garrett's new offices at Carmelite House at London's Embankment, UK completed in Mar 1993 are radical in design. The architects are ORMS who maximised natural light and vistas of the River Thames. The 140 offices and rooms were designed and fitted out at a cost of 4 million pounds sterling. The contractor John Lelliott completed the fit-out in 52 weeks. Costs were reduced by maintaining the existing ceilings, floors and exit doors. Each office has one-and-a-third glazed walls. The shared wall acts as a storage system for files.

Cool change
Article Abstract:
Direct expansion air conditioning systems are easy to install and cheaper than other systems. They work by circulating refrigerant around a building, carrying heat to remote condensers. However, the amount of refrigerant circulating in occupied spaces combined with fears about the future availability of HCFCs is promoting suppliers and customers to reassess the merits of hydronic systems. These circulate water and keep the relativley small amounts of coolant away from people.
