Hot story
Article Abstract:
The author examines the "time equivalent analysis," a new method used to calculate the amount of fire protection a building needs. The new analysis presents a reduction in fire resistance of many tall, glass structures from two to one hour allowing engineers to utilize a new technique, developed by Margaret Law in the 1970s, of applying a single 2mm thick intumescent coating off site replacing the current practice of applying a 25 mm spray insulation on site, a method to be first used by the Greater London Authority headquarters in London, England.

See you later, adjudicator: who will act as adjudicators when the Construction Act finally becomes law? and will the new system take the industry forward, or could the reverse prove to be the case?
Article Abstract:
The Construction Act will not be launched for another 10 months and the adjudicators will be drawn from the construction industry, familiar with technical and financial issues. They will also have to make decisions about the interpretation of contracts and there could be a call to appoint architects/engineers as adjudicators under standard forms and related subcontracts. They are in a good position to act impartially and could be best placed to take the initiative in determining the facts and the law.
