Study: using E-payments, billers could save billions

Killen Associates of Palo Alto, CA, has released a new study claiming that banks, utilities, water and cable companies could save $1.2 billion each year by effectively using electronic billing and payment systems. The study reports that e-mail presentment poses 50 cent potential savings on each bill as compared to the manual First-Class bill presentment through the US Postal Service, with costs ranging from 70 cents to $1.5) per bill. The company is regarding this possibility as a revenue generator for big utilities which can take on the processing assignments for smaller utilities.

FCC debuts site to help consumers choose long-distance

The Federal Communications Commission unveiled its MarketSense Web site, www.fcc.gov/marketsense, in Nov 1999 to provide consumers with 10 tips in choosing a long-distance carrier. A list of Web sites that feature information on selecting a telecommunications company is also included in the site. The Web site addresses the advertising, marketing and direct marketing of long-distance services, such as dial-around services or the '10-10' numbers.
