Sweepstakes rumblings reach fever pitch at Senate hearing
Article Abstract:
Sweepstakes marketers testified during a Senate hearing that most Americans are not misled by sweepstakes headlines that seem to declare someone a winner. The hearing was part of the deliberations on the Deceptive Mail Prevention and Enforcement Act, or S. 335. The bill imposes bigger penalties and tougher standards to prevent deceptive mailings. The bill's author, Sen. Susan Collins, said the key issue is whether sweepstakes mailings deceive consumers by not telling them that they need not purchase to enter the sweepstakes.
