What Rugby can teach industry aboput fair play
Article Abstract:
The construction industry has supported the Conservative party but has not seen many rewards for its support. The party should beware that support may vanish if the industry's demands are not met. The recession in construction is largely due to the activities of property developers who have taken the profits from new buildings while depending on the skills of construction firms. They should be eliminated from construction, along with the collateral warrrantee which is in their interests, and builders should deal directly with customers.

Tender letters and wage packets
Article Abstract:
Changing political features of the construction industry are overviewed along with salary levels paid by contractors, long tender lists and professional practices. Dutch auctions are increasingly being held as tendering becomes saturated, and the subsequent breakdown of communication is discussed. A survey of building firms shows that 43% now believe the construction industry would be best served by a Labour government, compared to about 34% in June 1991. The current salary rate for building professionals is tabulated.

Weakness in division, strength through unity
Article Abstract:
The Building Employers Confederation (BEC) is riven by infighting and dominated by a few powerful cliques. This has led to the dismissal of three director generals and has weakened the organisation at a time when the industry needs a strong voice. The BEC should be merged with other building industry associations and reformed to form a single, well organised body which would have the interests of members at its heart.
