Audi's 1996-1999 Audi A4 models feature V-6 engines, which are smoother, quieter and more responsive though they are not the most powerful engines in the 'near-luxury' league. Gear changes with the new five-speed automatic transmission are so smooth that they practically set new standards for the entire industry. Downshifts occur promptly for passing. Acceleration is adequate with automatic transmission in the turbocharged Audi A4 versions, but they are best with manual shift functions.

Regardless of the engine, however, all 3-Series BMWs are superlative in terms of their sporty handling characteristics that are supported considerably by sharply precise yet fluid steering. Ride quality is excellent in comparison to many other cars with softer suspensions, and these 318i models absorb plenty of road flaws. Braking power is potent.

The V-6 engines in Audi's 1993-1998 Audi 90/Cabriolet models run smoothly and quietly, and power delivery is very linear. With the four-speed automatic transmission, however, the V-6 Audi lags in off-the-line acceleration and its ability to deliver quick bursts of speed in around- town driving is limited. The automatic also shifts somewhat abruptly and tends to hold each gear too long. Cabriolets look great but suffer from excessive body shake and flex on bumpy roads.
