Beat car crime
Article Abstract:
Car alarm systems, manual security equipment and electronic immobilisers have varying levels of effectiveness in deterring automobile theft. The best car alarm systems incorporate a back-up battery and engine immobiliser, such as the 420 pounds sterling Scorpion 858. Manual security devices are most useful as a deterrent, cost between six and 128.50 pounds sterling and include steering wheel and road wheel clamps. Some of these must be professionally fitted. Electronic immobilisers can prevent cars from being driven away, but must also be professionally fitted. Car crime costs about 1.3 billion pounds sterling a year, with car thefts reaching 582,300 cases in 1991.

Avoiding car crime
Article Abstract:
Car manufacturers are steadily improving car security by using tougher glass and fitting deadlocks but even these will not stop a thief who is determined. Car owners should always try to park in a public place which is well lit and has few entrances and exits. Stereos should have a removable panel and be coded and should be marked with the car's registration number. Valuables should not be visible in the car, doors should be locked at petrol stations or shops and the windows should be etched with the registration number. Registration and MOT documents should not be kept in the car.

Clamping down on car theft
Article Abstract:
Steering and ignition locks do not usually deter car thieves because they can overcome them. There are four main sorts of add-on security devices. These are gear lever and handbrake attachments, steering wheel devices, transmission locks and wheel clamps. None of the gear lever or handbrake devices was effective in tests. The best steering wheel devices were the Disklok, costing 100 pounds sterling and the Autolok 2000T at 70 pounds. The Stoplock Compact Steering Wheel Lock was effective and cheap at 20 pounds. Halfords High Security Vehicle Clamp was the best wheel clamp.
